Berlioz Beatrice et Benedict Overture
Elgar Cello Concerto
Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5

Kirsten Jenson, cello
Bristol Classical Players
Tom Gauterin, conductor

Bristol Classical Players return to Cheltenham Town Hall with two of the most touching masterpieces. Award-winning cellist Kirsten Jenson joins us for Elgar’s late, wistful Cello Concerto, a poignant portrait of a man coming to terms with his vanished world. Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony, in his own words, portrays his struggle with Fate: beginning in darkness and mystery, it ranges through every emotion before emerging victorious in a triumphant finale. These two heavyweights are preceded by Berlioz’s featherlight overture depicting the two quarrelling lovers, Beatrice and Benedict. Ten minutes of high jinks which seem over before they’ve begun, this is the perfect encapsulation of ‘much ado about nothing’!
